Soft underfoot, quiet, and it drains rather than puddling. Lay a membrane first if you don't want it disappearing into the mud over a winter.

Woodchip Questions

How much does a ton bag cover?
A ton bag holds around 1.1m³, so at a 50mm mulching depth it covers roughly 20m²; at 75mm for a path, about 13m²; at 100mm for a play area, about 10m². Use the calculator above for your actual measurements — it adds 10% for settling.
Will woodchip rob nitrogen from my soil?
Only if you dig it in. Spread on top as a mulch it's fine — the nitrogen effect happens at the thin contact layer where it meets the soil, not down in the root zone. Don't rotavate fresh chip into a bed you're about to plant.
Is it safe around children and pets?
Screened and graded is the one to use for play areas — consistent piece size, fines screened out. It's untreated wood from local tree work, with nothing added. As with any mulch, it isn't something you'd want a dog eating in quantity.
How long before it needs topping up?
Chip breaks down and beds in, so expect to top up beds every couple of years and busier paths a bit sooner. That breaking down is doing you a favour on a border — it's feeding the soil as it goes.
Do you spread it?
No — it's tipped loose where the vehicle can safely reach, same as our firewood. Have a barrow and a rake ready. If it's a big area, tip it in two or three spots rather than one heap and you'll save yourself a lot of walking.
What's actually in it?
Softwood, brash and the bits of tree that don't make decent firewood, from Clearcut Tree Surgery jobs across Dorset. All local, all untreated, nothing bought in. It's the part of the tree that used to go to landfill.
