Seasoned Ash Questions

Why do people always ask for ash?

Three reasons. It burns well even at slightly higher moisture than other hardwoods, it barely spits, and it gives a clean steady flame rather than a fierce one. For an open fire in a living room, where sparks and smoke actually matter, it's the obvious pick.

Is it better than the mixed load?

For an open fire, yes. For a closed stove the difference matters far less — a stove door catches the spitting that ash avoids, so the seasoned mixed at a lower price per cubic metre is usually the smarter buy.

Where does the ash come from?

Largely from ash dieback work across Dorset. It's a grim disease and it has brought down an enormous number of trees round here — turning that timber into firewood is at least a decent end for it.

Does it need seasoning further?

No. It's air-dried under cover and sold ready to burn. Just keep it dry once it's with you — off the ground, under cover, air moving through.

Is ash good for pizza ovens and fire pits?

It's very good, and its low spitting is a real advantage on an open fire pit. For a pizza oven the kiln dried gets to temperature faster and smokes less, which matters more in an enclosed oven.
