What Is Kiln Dried Firewood?

The best burn available

Kiln dried firewood is oven-dried in large industrial kilns until the moisture content drops to below 20% — and often well below that. This is a significant difference from even well-seasoned wood, which typically has a moisture content of 25–35%.

The reason this matters is simple: moisture in wood means energy wasted. When you burn wood with high moisture content, a large portion of the heat energy produced goes into boiling off that water rather than warming your room. Kiln dried wood gives you significantly more usable heat per log.

It also burns cleaner. Wet wood smoulders and produces thick smoke, depositing creosote and tar in your flue — a fire hazard that shortens the life of your liner and increases chimney sweep costs. Kiln dried wood burns hot and clean, dramatically reducing these deposits.

For homes in Smoke Control Areas — which cover much of Bournemouth and Poole — kiln dried hardwood burned in a DEFRA-exempt appliance is the approved approach. Our kiln dried logs are sourced 100% from local Dorset tree surgery operations and processed right here in the county.

Why It Performs Better

Six reasons to choose kiln dried

01
More Heat Per Log

Under 20% moisture means more energy heating your room rather than boiling water. You'll use fewer logs for the same warmth — and save money over the season.

02
Cleaner Burn

Dramatically less smoke and fewer harmful particulates than wet or unseasoned wood. Better for your health, your neighbours and air quality across Bournemouth and Poole.

03
Less Creosote

Wet wood deposits creosote and tar in your flue — a serious fire hazard. Kiln dried wood burns clean, keeping your chimney safer and reducing chimney sweep frequency.

04
Lights First Time

Dry wood catches quickly with minimal firelighters and builds to a strong, even fire with less effort. No frustrating failed starts on cold evenings.

05
Smoke Control Ready

Compliant for use in Smoke Control Areas covering much of Bournemouth and Poole when burned in a DEFRA-exempt appliance. The responsible choice for urban areas.

06
Ready Immediately

No drying time. No seasoning period. No checking moisture levels. Kiln dried logs go straight from delivery to your fire the same day they arrive.

How It Compares

Common Questions

Kiln dried firewood FAQs

Our kiln dried firewood is dried to under 20% moisture content — well within the Ready to Burn standard. Typical moisture levels are 15–18%, which delivers excellent heat output and a clean burn.
Yes. Kiln dried hardwood logs with under 20% moisture content can be burned in a DEFRA-exempt appliance (an approved wood burning stove) in a Smoke Control Area. Much of Bournemouth and Poole falls within Smoke Control Areas — if you're unsure whether your stove qualifies, check the DEFRA website or ask your stove installer.
Absolutely. Unlike seasoned or unseasoned wood, kiln dried logs require no drying time. They can go on the fire the same day they're delivered — no waiting, no checking moisture levels.
Our kiln dried logs are mixed hardwoods sourced from local tree surgery operations across Dorset — typically ash, oak, sycamore and beech. All excellent burning hardwoods. Because our supply comes from local tree surgeons, the exact species mix varies depending on what's coming through the yard.
A ton bag holds approximately 1.1 m³ of firewood. A full transit load is 4.4 m³ — exactly four times as much. The full transit is our best value option per cubic metre. A half transit sits at 2.2 m³.
All firewood is tipped loose — we back up the vehicle and tip the load where you direct us. Please let us know about any access restrictions or where you'd like it placed when you order. We cover all BH postcodes free of charge, plus Ringwood and Fordingbridge. A small delivery fee applies to Swanage, Blandford Forum and parts of the New Forest.
