Ash, oak, beech, sycamore and birch, in whatever proportions that month's tree work gives us. It's all hardwood — there's no softwood filler and nothing imported. The mix is a feature rather than a compromise: you get quick-catching logs and slower, denser ones in the same load.

It's ready to burn and it burns well. Kiln dried is drier still, so it lights a little easier, burns a little hotter and sooties a little less. Seasoned mixed costs meaningfully less per cubic metre, which is why it outsells everything else we do.

It's air-dried under cover in the yard and isn't sent out until it burns properly. If you want a guaranteed sub-20% figure every single load, that's what the kiln dried is for.

Hardwood spits far less than resinous softwood, so it's fine on an open fire. If you want the least spitting of all, pure ash is the one people choose for open fireplaces.

A stove lit most evenings gets through something like a full transit (4.4m³) over a winter; most weekends only, a ton bag or two. An open fire burns roughly double a stove. There's a calculator on the home page that sizes it in three questions.
