Is a load right for you?
Three things to check first
Somewhere dry to put it
A load needs a log store, a shed, a garage or a covered corner. Dry wood delivered in October can be wet wood by January if it sits on bare ground under a tarp.
How to store it2A fire you light most evenings
A 5kW stove lit most evenings gets through 3 to 4 cubic metres in a winter, which is close to one full transit. Weekend fires want far less.
Work out your winter3Room for the truck
The truck needs room to back up and firm ground to tip on. If the drive is long, soft or has a tight entrance, tell us when you order.
How delivery worksHow far a load goes
What households really use
For a sense check, this is what people round here order in a season. The biggest variable is whether it is a stove or an open fire: an open fire gets through roughly twice the wood for the same warmth.
| Household | Per winter | Usually buys |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend fire, modern stove | 1–1.5m³ | a ton bag, sometimes two |
| Most evenings, 5kW stove | 3–4m³ | a full transit |
| Every evening, large stove | 5–7m³ | a full transit plus a half |
| Open fire, used regularly | 6–9m³ | two full transits |
| Stove as the main heating | 7–10m³ | two full transits, split over the season |
Work it out
How much do you need, and will it fit?
Two quick sums: a winter of wood from how you use the fire, and whether a load will go in your log store.
How much do you need?
Three questions. It is a guide, not a promise: a big draughty house burns more than a snug one.
You need about3.9m³
We would order a full Transit load (4.4m³)
£420 in seasoned mixed · about £2.86 an evening
Order thisWorked out at about 0.03m³ an evening for a stove, and double that for an open fire. How much firewood do I need?
Will it fit my log store?
Logs arrive loose. Stacked neatly they take up about two-thirds of the space. Measure the inside of your store.
Your store holds about2.4m³
That is a half Transit load, stacked, with a little room to spare.

Not sure a load is for you?
The smaller sizes
How much is a load of logs?
A half transit (2.2m³) of seasoned mixed logs is £230 and a full transit (4.4m³) is £420. Kiln dried is £250 and £450. Unseasoned logs, to dry yourself, are £150 and £260. All delivered, with VAT included.
How big is a full load of logs?
A full transit is 4.4 loose cubic metres: four ton bags’ worth. Tipped on a drive, it makes a heap roughly the size of a small car.
Is a trailer load the same as a transit load?
It depends who is selling it. “Load”, “trailer load” and “truckload” mean whatever the seller wants them to mean, so always ask for the volume in cubic metres. Ours are fixed and published: a half transit is 2.2m³ and a full transit is 4.4m³.
Is it cheaper to buy logs in bulk?
Considerably. A full transit of kiln dried works out at £102 a cubic metre, against £132 for the same wood in ton bags. The only reason not to is storage: a load arrives tipped loose and needs somewhere dry to go.
How long will a full load last?
On a 5kW stove burning most evenings, a full transit is about a winter: 3 to 4 cubic metres is typical. An open fire used regularly gets through 6 to 9.
Do you stack a bulk load?
No. We tip loose and leave the stacking to you. It is a big part of how the prices stay where they are.
Will a full load fit on my drive?
It arrives as a tipped heap roughly the size of a small car, so you need somewhere it can go without blocking the drive. If that is a problem, take a half transit, or ton bags one at a time.
