Stack now, burn next winter
Unseasoned firewood — also called green wood — is freshly cut timber that hasn't been dried. It has a high moisture content, often above 50%, which makes it unsuitable for burning immediately. But it's the most cost-effective way to buy firewood if you have somewhere to store it.
Our unseasoned firewood is mixed hardwood only — no softwood in the load. Ash, oak, beech, sycamore and similar species from local Dorset tree surgery operations. The same locally sourced, 100% recycled timber as the rest of our range, just at the earlier stage of the process.
Order in spring or early summer, stack it in a well-ventilated spot with rain cover overhead, and by the following autumn you'll have firewood with moisture levels approaching 25% — perfectly usable seasoned logs that cost you significantly less than buying pre-seasoned stock.
A full transit load at £260 delivers 4.4 m³ of mixed hardwood. That's enough firewood to last most households an entire winter once seasoned — at a total cost that would only cover a few ton bags of kiln dried.
Order to burning — the timeline
Place your order in spring or early summer. We'll deliver and tip the load wherever you direct us.
Stack the logs in a well-ventilated spot — ideally south-facing. Keep rain off the top, leave the sides open.
Leave for 12–18 months. The sun, wind and airflow do the work. A moisture meter will confirm when it's ready.
Load up your stove with properly seasoned hardwood you've prepared yourself — at a fraction of the cost.
How to season your logs
Stack logs loosely so air can circulate around every piece. A log store, open-sided shed or even a simple frame with a tarpaulin over the top works perfectly. Avoid fully enclosed spaces.
Place your log store facing south or west to maximise exposure to sun and prevailing winds. These two things dry wood faster than anything else.
A roof or tarpaulin cover is essential — rain actively re-introduces moisture. Keep the sides open for airflow but always protect from above.
Keep the bottom of your stack off bare soil if possible. A pallet, concrete base or gravel prevents ground moisture wicking up into the lower logs.
A moisture meter costs under £20 online and takes the guesswork out of it entirely. Aim for below 25% before burning — under 20% is ideal.
Most hardwoods need a minimum of 12 months. Denser species like oak benefit from 18+ months. Ash seasons fastest and can often be ready in 12 months with good conditions.
