Quick Answers

The Five We Get Most Often

What moisture content should firewood be?
Under 20%, and that is what everything we sell as seasoned or kiln dried is dried to. Above about 25% you start losing a real share of the heat to boiling off water; above 30% the fire struggles, the glass blackens and creosote builds in the flue.
How much firewood does a house use in a winter?
For a 5kW stove burning most evenings through a Dorset winter, 3 to 4 cubic metres — roughly a full transit load. Weekend-only use is nearer 1 to 1.5. A regularly used open fire can reach 6 to 9, because most of its heat goes up the chimney.
Is seasoned firewood ready to burn?
Yes. Our seasoned range is air-dried under cover until it is ready and sold ready to burn. The only product that needs further drying is our unseasoned firewood, which is sold deliberately green at a lower price for people drying it themselves over 12 to 18 months.
What is the best wood to burn?
Ash, if you want a single answer — high heat, long burn, lights easily and barely spits. Oak gives more heat still and burns longer but is much harder to get going. For most people a mixed hardwood load is the best buy, because it gives you light timber to start the fire and dense timber to hold it.
